Background: Penman Springs Vineyard is a family-owned, artisan winery situated in the rolling hills east of Paso Robles. The proprietors, Carl and Beth McCasland, along with winemaker Larry Roberts, craft a lineup of varietal offerings of Muscat Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petite Sirah, along with Petit Verdot for use in their "Meritage" blend. Penman Springs produces 2,000 cases a year, most of it which is available at the winery and through the wine club. On a clear, crisp winter weekend, I visited Penman Springs Vineyards and spent at least two hours enjoying wine and conversation with Beth McCasland. Boy, was she a hoot!
Penman Springs Vineyard '08 Muscat Blanc "Dry Humour," Paso Robles ($15): Here's what I scribbled down for tasting notes: "peach, dried mango (nose); oak and orange peel flavors; creamy texture with a dry, lingering finish and balanced acidity." I may not be a white wine drinker, but I sure enjoyed this wine. Remember to serve this wine chilled. Interested in other wines from Penman Springs Vineyard? Try the Petite Sirah!

Cheap flights to Muscat There are some who say that sitting at home reading is the equivalent of travel, because the experiences described in the book are more or less the same as the experiences one might have on a voyage, and there are those who say that there is no substitute for venturing out into the world. My own opinion is that it is best to travel extensively but to read the entire time, hardly glancing up to look out of the window of the airplane, train, or hired camel.
