Kaleidos 2004 Morpheus, Paso Robles

Background: Established in 2004, Kaleidos is a family-owned and operated winery and vineyard. Nestled in the Templeton Gap of the Santa Lucia Mountains in Paso Robles, the vineyard sits atop two south facing slopes.  The winery and vineyard were established with the mission of producing the finest premium handcrafted wines.  Owner Steve Martell's passion and focus is Rhône varietals. Believe it or not, my first encounter with these wines occured at the 2010 Rhône Rangers Paso Robles Experience on February 14.  Kaleidos was the highlight of my tasting experience that afternoon, particularly the 2005 Morpheus, 2005 Syrah and 2006 Grenache.

Stats: 67% Syrah (Kiler Canyon Vineyards and Starr Ranch), 23% Grenache (Terra Bella Vineyard), 10% Mourvedre (Halter Ranch).  Aged in a mix of new and neutral French, American and Hungarian Oak.  16% Alc. By Vol.  266 cases.

Tasting Notes: The Kaleidos 2004 Morpheus is a Rhône blend (Syrah/Grenache/Mourvedre) exhibiting toasted oak, cherry and blueberry aromas, blackberry and dark chocolate flavors, leaving a lingering and spicy finish with firm and robust taninns.  This medium to full-bodied wine teases the palate with silky and delicate texture, opening up to amazing depth and complexity.
