Background: With twenty-five years of wine-making experience under his belt, Norm Yost has crafted memorable and award-winning Pinot Noir from vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills, Santa Maria Valley and San Luis Obispo County. For something different and refreshing, try the Flying Goat Cellars, Goat Bubbles Sparkling Brut Rosé. Why is the winery called Flying Goat Cellars? Check out Norm's explanation for the kitschy name here.
Stats: The Flying Goat Cellars 2006 Pinot Noir, Salisbury Vineyard ($36) marks the second vintage of this vineyard designate Pinot Noir. The Salisbury Vineyard is located in San Luis Obispo County's Avila Valley, a mere one mile from the Pacific Ocean. Flying Goat sources both clones 2A and 115 from this vineyard. The wine aged in French oak barrels, 20% of which were new, for nine months. The wine was bottled in August 2007 and given an additional six months of bottle aging before release in May 2008. 14.8% alcohol.
Tasting Notes: Bright and succulent with rich cherry, raspberry and spicy aromas. A smooth, silky texture combines with flavors of dried red fruit and cinnamon for a restrained finish; well-balanced with supple tannins. The nose says it all in this wine...
