Dubost Ranch 2006 Tempranillo, Paso Robles

Background: Dubost Ranch is a family-owned winery handcrafting limited production wines grown locally and in the family vineyard in the historic Adelaida area west of Paso Robles.

The Dubost Family left the Cherbourg region of France after the Franco-Prussian War of 1871 to escape the violence of Europe. They were blacksmiths by trade and immigrated to Hawaii and the Black Hills of South Dakota before settling on the Central California Coast. There is an historical marker at the site of the old store and post office commemorating the town of Adelaida and the role played by the Dubost family.

The vineyards and winery are on 320 acres of hillsides in the heart of Adelaida. The climate and limestone soils are perfect for producing premium grapes and the straw bale winery is a model for sustainable production facility. Dubost Ranch is a beautiful property located on Chimney Rock Road west of the historic town of Adelaida. A few months ago, Victor Abascal of Vines on the Marycrest and I drove to the winery to visit Curt and Kate Dubost and sample their wines.

Stats: 100% Tempranillo from Starr Ranch in Paso Robles, which is located next door to Dubost Ranch. Aged 32 months half in new oak (50% French/50% American) and half in neutral oak. 112 cases

Tasting Notes: Bright red fruit aromas with sweet tobacco notes and vibrant flavors of cranberry leading to an airy, smooth mouthfeel. Other Dubost Ranch recommendations include the '06 Carmenere ($30) and '05 Gran Reserva ($32).
